My Love Affair with Buffy The Vampire Slayer

Ah, the 90's...OK you weirdos, that' the 1990's. I'm not that old. I was rockin' my mid-20's and living the single life. Dating guys I could barely maintain a snappy conversation with. And boy did I idolize the Buffy gang. Everyone on that show had a better love-life than I did. I'm pretty sure even Buffy's mom, Joyce did better...there was that one episode..."Band Candy"....I say no more. But here's the thing, that show did more to cement the concept of placing passionate love on a pedestal for me than maybe even Romeo and Juliet from my actual youth. Buffy was worshiped by not one but 2 suitors, Willow got 2 great tragic loves and the start of another in the last season. Even Anya and Xander were passionate in their own wacky way. By far the pinnacle of passionate love on the show though and, yeah, my favorite, was Spike. Deeply misunderstood, often dangerous and ruthless, heartbreakingly honest in love, and of course a near pathological liar when it suited him. Below, the finest of his soliloquies on the nature of true love. Ok, so I ask you do you think he's right?

Devastated by Moonstruck

1987, oh my. I was in my teens and nearly graduating high school. And this movie gutted me. These people were from a different planet. The one where romantic relationships could be insanely intense. My parents were definitely of the Loretta camp. Sensible and quiet. And I oh so much wanted to be of the Ronny tribe where people did terrible things in the name of passionate love. But it all turned out OK in the end. Because the world rewards true love and those that persist rather than giving in to the safe stuff. Right?
